Basingstoke Blues

A lorry on a motorway
Had an accident one day
Shed and spilled its heavy load
Of concrete by the busy road
Police in their thoughtfulness
Instead of clearing up the mess
Put a ring road round the site
Made sure it was lit at night
Planners, developers, architects
Came from Surrey and Middlesex
Took cash grants from the government
Make sure it was wisely spent
Firms got incentives and cash
To move to the site of the motorway crash
Some of them didn't quite get the joke
And so it turned into Basingstoke
I don't want to go to Basingstoke
Don't take me to Basingstoke
The driver got an MBE
Appeared on the BBC
Told them of his tale of woe
Of how he had nowhere to go
The DC said that they could give
A delectable place to live
Easy links by road and rail
With us you will never fail
But I don't want to go to Eastrop Park
Because I don't want to get mugged in the dark
I don't want to be led to believe
How easy it is to leave
Where the cars are belching effluent
The alleyways stink of excrement
There's so much smoke it makes me choke
I don't want to go to Basingstoke
I don't want to go to Basingstoke
Don't take me to Basingstoke
